People need to realize that for a lot of people, riding horses is not all about winning ribbons. Showing is fun, I love it, don't get me wrong but I could take it or leave it. I totally understand why there are riders out there who ride for pleasure and just that and the huge focus of showing and winning in this industry is a bit sad because other talents get swept under the rug and people are made to feel like they're lesser when they don't show. Showing is an immense privilege that people may not have access to even if they want to. It is so ridiculously expensive. A single rated show is more than a lot of people my age may make in a month. The cost alone is enough to deter people but the pressures and politics associated with it even more so may put people off and THAT IS OKAY. You are still awesome and you are still a rider even if you can't or don't want to show. Showing merely provides means to showcase your talent and get more recognition for it. It doesn't make you as a rider. All of the behind the scenes stuff like lessons and those grinding rides where you want to tear your hair out are what help you hone your skills. I feel like as it stands right now, there's probably a lot of really talented people that we never hear about because they can't afford to show or simply don't want to. That's why it's so cool how much social media has developed in the equine niche because I've found out about some pretty insanely talented riders that I would've never otherwise known about. Anyways this has become a ramble but basically don't let people make you feel like your accomplishments are meaningless just cause you don't want to pay $1,000 for a 1 cent ribbon. I getchu even though I'm one of the many crazies who would totally spend that for a ribbon and who enjoys the hectic nature of showing. But, I also enjoy quiet rainy bridleless rides like this. A nice balance is what works for me, others may have different ideas of what is best for them and that's okay. There's no right or wrong. We love the animals and you can enjoy them whether you compete or not. Horses can be competition animals or pets. It just depends on what their owner wants!
